We’ve hit the ground running in January, and we thought it was time to share an update on the progress of the 2018-19 Winter Challenge.
A quick recap: we know winter can be a challenging time to be active, so our winter challenge is designed to help with some extra motivation! The challenge runs over the three months from 1 December 2018 to 28 February 2019 and we’re supporting Shelter.
We’ve challenged everyone in our National Rewards programme to opt into the challenge and help us virtually travel around the earth – on two feet or two wheels! The Earth’s circumference is roughly 25,000 miles. Every time the challenge participants collectively travel 25,000 miles, we will donate £250 – the cash value of one point for each mile – to Shelter. Challenge participants will also earn one BetterTicket for each mile they run, walk or cycle during the challenge. Tickets are entered into our weekly prize draw for 25 lots of 5,000 BetterPoints.
So, how have we all been doing?
We’re really pleased to report that so far 2,164 people have joined the challenge. Together they have travelled almost 75,000 miles by foot or bike. That’s the equivalent of 3 times around the earth! We think that’s impressive for a time of year when lots of us aren’t in our normal routines and want to hibernate. Participants have burned almost six million calories and potentially saved almost 28kg of CO2. And they’re not stopping – of those who have joined the challenge, 79% have tracked activities in the past week.
We all know that increasing physical activity has a significant impact on physical and mental health and wellbeing. By being part of the challenge and raising money for Shelter, users are not only benefiting themselves but helping others. Win win!
And it’s far from over – the challenge runs until the end of February so there’s still plenty of time to join, to clock up some mileage and earn some BetterPoints for Shelter and some BetterTickets for yourself. January is traditionally a time for new starts, new goals and new challenges – the perfect opportunity to get involved.
The Winter Challenge utilises one of our ‘gamification features’. These features - which include the collective earning and prize draws used here - are designed to engage and motivate app users to get active and stay active in order to change behaviour.
