York has long had high levels of cycling, yet car travel and traffic congestion continue to rise. City of York Council commissioned BetterPoints to deliver a multi-modal rewards programme to shift travel behaviour away from single-occupancy car use, initially through the Department for Transport’s Access Fund and later Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding.

Key outcomes

  • 2,600,000 active and sustainable journeys recorded
  • 1,400,000 replaced single occupancy car trips
  • 33% travelling by bus more often
