1,500 free travel tickets claimed in Sheffield sustainable transport promotion

Sheffield City Council offered a free one-day travel pass to people signed up to the BetterPoints Sheffield programme in the run-up to Christmas.

The council wanted to encourage more people to try using the buses and trams, and to reduce congestion during the Christmas shopping period.

The programme awards points for travelling more actively and sustainably. Those points can be exchanged for vouchers or donated to charity. Anyone who had earned 50 points or more could claim a free pass.

The free bus passes were claimed by nearly 1,500 people.

Recorded bus trips increased by 29 per cent during the promotion.
