BetterPoints is preparing to launch an innovative Climate-KIC funded electrical waste recycling programme

What happens to electrical items when they are broken or no longer wanted? E-waste or electronic waste is created when an electronic product is discarded after the end of its useful life. The rapid expansion of technology means that a very large amount of e-waste is created every minute.

E-waste covers virtually everything with a plug or a battery. The very nature of the components and materials which make up electrical items means that it’s imperative for human health that they’re disposed of responsibly – they can’t just be put in the bin.

BetterPoints has been selected to run a Climate-KIC funded localised pilot programme to reward people for correctly and responsibly disposing of e-waste. From April, residents in the Bath and North East Somerset area can receive BetterPoints when they recycle their waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) at recycling centres around the area.

Residents will simply need to download the BetterPoints app and scan a QR code and answer a couple of simple questions when they recycle their items. For this they’ll receive BetterPoints, our digital currency which can be exchanged for vouchers or donated to charity.  Participants will receive messaging explaining how much CO2 they have saved by responsibly disposing of their e-waste.

In May we’ll be taking the programme to two schools, with WEEE recycling and disposal bins being readily available to the school community – making responsible disposal very straightforward for families. To raise awareness children will learn in school about the importance of responsibly recycling e-waste. BetterTickets will be earned alongside the BetterPoints and these will be entered into regular prize draws.

What will happen to the items? Well, in line with the Government’s new Resources and Waste Strategy which focuses on repair and reuse these items will, as far as possible, be repaired and refurbished where necessary and donated to communities who need them most.
