Employee well-being and mental health addressed by BetterPoints 5-a-DAY WFH programme
A new tool from behaviour change technology experts BetterPoints aims to prevent a wellbeing crisis among staff working from home.
Almost a fifth of the UK population will need mental health support as a direct consequence of Covid-19, reported the Guardian last week. Meanwhile, the Mirror revealed that office workers fear their mental health will suffer if they have to spend another six months working from home.
Workers are struggling to cope with the flexibility of working from home and work-life balance is fast becoming a much bigger problem than it has ever been before. If they are to maintain productivity levels through new work disciplines, employers and HR teams need to support colleagues to manage their time in a way that is healthy, conducive to working, and productive in the long term.
As the home replaces the office and pets replace colleagues, many people have lost the important structure to their day. Cabin fever, isolation and poor work-life balance are becoming common features of working life, and can cause a serious decline in physical and mental health, and in the general wellbeing of staff.
Employees are beginning to burn out as the ‘new normal’ takes hold and boundaries blur. People are working in bed, not washing or dressing, and spending all day in front of the computer – even taking their laptop into the toilet and working from there. Many over-compensate and work longer hours than they would in an office, which has its own negative impacts on mental health – particularly for women with children, reports the Independent.
We are heading for a wellbeing crisis if we don’t act now.
That’s why BetterPoints has developed the 5-a-DAY work management tool.
It enables employers to motivate and reward employees during COVID-19 to address employee physical well-being, mental health and the collective employee carbon footprint.
5-a-DAY is a three-month programme of incentives, content and messaging that encourage employees to observe five activities that frame a healthy and structured working day.
Using the BetterPoints App, employees can achieve their individual ‘5-a-DAY’:
- Feel great!
Freshen-up with a shower, fuel-up with a good breakfast and start the day feeling alive!
- Look great!
Feel fabulous in clothes you love and ace those Zoom calls.
- Walk to work – to work from home!
Leave the house, go for a walk, a run or a cycle ride – 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles…. The BetterPoints app track your activity for you. Get some air in your lungs and a spring in your step so you arrive at your desk ready to take on the world.
- Storm the water-cooler
Human contact is what keeps us going, so chat in person with at least one colleague today.
- Clock off
Go for a walk, dig the garden, bake a cake – do something to mark the end of your working day.
Out of the box, 5-a-DAY incentives include medals for users to collect, motivational messages, useful tips, inspiring stories, and prize draws. Employers can add the power of financial incentives in the form of the BetterPoints currency, which can be exchanged for high-street vouchers or donated to charity.
5-a-DAY is all managed through the BetterPoints award-winning system and delivered through a free user-facing app, making it easy to manage and deploy.
A three-month programme starts at £9,500, with the option to boost it with bundles of the BetterPoints currency which can be redeemed against high-street vouchers or converted to cash donations for charity.
